A Man Of Many Hobbies – Diversifying Interests

Two hands stretched out

I’m excited to start my first independent post. For my wonderful wife, this writing “stuff” comes easy. For myself, starting a blog was definitely out of my comfort zone but, nevertheless, it has been a great tool for stretching my limits. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are not my strong suits. Luckily, I have Abby to proof read my posts so you can actually understand them.

Hobbies are something that we all have but I have, for what ever reason, taken on way too many. Abby often says that it is easy to buy me presents because of my many hobbies. From a young age, I loved video games, playing sports and working out. I always wanted to be the “fastest”… why? Play ground bragging rights (haha). Through the middle school years, listening to classic rock music with my Dad during every car ride inspired me to buy a Fender Squire electric guitar and start playing. With zero lessons and hundreds of hours of practice by the end of high school I actually started to sound like I knew what I was doing. Not only do I like to play, but I enjoy writing too. Writing music is something that has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember…and I hope to one day get the courage to put stuff out to share with the world. However, that is a topic for another day.

Since becoming a homeowner I have worked on shifting my perspective from “project are a burden” to “how can I take pride in the work that I’ve done”. What I have found enjoyable about house projects is that it has expanded my knowledge and knowhow when it comes to craftsmanship. What is even more exciting is having the excuse to spend hours at hardware stores and investing in tools. My passion for this began in high school when I worked side jobs with some very hard working men that I wanted to emulate. I wanted to obtain the same knowledge and skills that they had to some day use around my own home. This hobby and interest has saved my family and I a lot of money through the years. I would say to any young man that it is essential to know the basics of home maintenance. For me, it was putting myself around older and wiser men that I could work along side. I also chose to take a few electives in college on basic electrical and plumbing skills.

Why Is It Important To Have Hobbies?

As I have been listing off hobbies and how they have affected me, I think it’s necessary for you, the reader, to understand that hobbies carry more significance than you might expect. Hobbies are whatever you personally find enjoyment in. It could be spending time with loved ones, hospitality toward others, cooking, exercise, crafting, etc. There are no limits to what a hobby can be, as long as it brings enjoyment and personal fulfillment to you. Hobbies have a unique way of challenging our minds and bodies, all while enjoying it in the process. A hobby could be what helps you burn off that extra energy in that day that otherwise might not be beneficial. A hobby can push you out of your comfort zone, challenging you to expand your knowledge and problem solve. A hobby produces growth. I often think of the verse in reference to the Bible that says, “Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks (Ecclesiastes 10:18)”. When we are idle, and procrastinate we leave room for distractions to fill our mind and our life. Things can deteriorate and get worse. Distractions can be harmful to the healthy version of you. There is definitely a balance to be found between being too busy, or not busy enough. Using time effectively and efficiently is extremely important, read about The Compound Effect today.

All For The Glory Of God

I hope something as simple as mentioning my hobbies sparks some personal, self-reflection as to how you spend your time and what you’re passionate about. Life is more than just a “nine to five” job. When we start to look at responsibilities as a way to grow we can find satisfaction in most anything we put our hands to. The Bible says, “…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 . It is my expectation that every hobby, passion, or interest would point to Christ.
