How to Form Godly Resolutions

Man reading a Bible

As the new year begins, the question of how this year will be different naturally arises. While we do not need a new year to start making changes or leaving ungodly habits behind, this season often invites reflection. Rather than outlining a list of resolutions to attempt or avoid, as we did in a previous article, I want to challenge you in a different way. I want to focus on the posture of the heart and mind from which our resolutions should be formed. Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

No matter what our hoped for resolution is, we should first acknowledge The Lord. It is NOT a matter of saying, “Lord, this is what I plan to do, now bless it.” Instead, it is a posture of the heart and mind that asks, “Lord, what would You have me do this year? What area of my life needs to be aligned with Your will?” The Lord’s prayer comes to mind… “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

The “acknowledge him” in Proverbs 3:6 could also be translated to be “know him” (see here). To “know him” we must pray, search the scriptures, and align our life to His word. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is applying the information that we know. You may know what the Bible says, but putting it into action is where the real work begins. That is where true wisdom begins (Proverbs 1:7 | Proverbs 2:10). Thankfully, God does not leave us to rely on our own strength. When we ask the Lord to guide and help us, He is faithful to lead. Let your prayer be, “God, let my life glorify You in every area.” In that posture, a resolution truly worth focusing on may begin to reveal itself.
