Why It’s Important To Reflect On Your Christian Walk
I recently was reflecting on my Christian walk. The man that I am today compared to the person that I used to be. I thank God that there is such a drastic difference!
The Christian walk is a journey in which we strive to become more like Jesus through a process called sanctification. It is a God-designed process that produces holiness in a believer. The fundamental response to following Jesus should be leaving behind our selfish past and living in Christ’s example and instructions daily (Romans 12:1, Galatians 2:20). We will never quite fully get there on this side of Heaven, but that doesn’t negate the responsibility and calling we have to bear fruit in our lives (John 15:1-27). We must try and honor God with every area of our lives—every action, every motive, and every thought (2 Corinthians 10:5, Matthew 22:37).
Reflection
Reflection is defined as “serious thought or consideration.” Have you reflected on your walk recently? Reflection isn’t meant to make you feel condemned or guilty (Romans 8:1-2). Rather, through the work of the Holy Spirit, it is meant to prompt conviction. Conviction becomes the motivation for change. Taking time to think about your relationship to God and your actions as a Christian allows you to examine the following things:
- Are you heading in the right direction?
- Are you in the same spot, dealing with the same sins ?
- What changes need to be made?
- Have you been reading your Bible and praying?
Daily Discipline Matters
Take a compass, for example. Over time, being off by just one degree will take you off course.
- At 100 meters, you’ll be off 5.2 feet.
- At 1 mile, you’ll be off 100 feet.
- At 60 miles, you’ll be off an entire mile.
One degree matters. This concept can apply to every area of your life. For example, not reading your Bible, not praying, or forsaking going to church will eventually lead to negative impacts in your walk. Neglecting daily disciples in your Christian walk will draw you off the narrow path that Christ calls us to walk.
Defining Moments
During my most recent reflection on my life in Christ, I was thinking about defining moments. A defining moment is defined as “an event that influences or changes all subsequent related occurrences.” These moments are situations in our life when we have the opportunity to seek God in prayer, search scripture, and pursue godly counsel to make the best decision to move forward. Do not let the flesh, the heart, bad counsel, or your struggles dictate your decision. There are many people who deal with hurts and struggles that no one will ever see. These struggles may be a product of the past, but they are rooted in the heart and mind.
Christians wrestle with lust, greed, impartiality, pride, and selfish tendencies, to name a few. Jesus knew that. He calls us to deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). Denying ALL of our fleshly desires (Galatians 5:24). Not only for our outward expressions (what people see), but for our innermost being. I call these moments where we have to look deep within ourselves, mirror moments. We must reflect on where we are and what direction we are going. We all have a past. Some past lives may be more colored than others. However, my prayer for you is that your past life is actually in the past. There is forgiveness and freedom in Christ. The Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you (past tense). But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
Walk In A Worthy Manner
Living a Maverick Life is simply desiring to glorify God in every area of your life. To love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength (Mark 12:30). Reflect on your Christian walk today and go forward living a godly life.
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.
Ephesians 4:1
As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the person.
Proverbs 27:19
Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
Psalm 119:34
If you love me, keep my commands.
John 14:15
You are My friends if you do what I command you.
John 15:14
